Soul Matters, a debut novel by Yolanda Tonette Sanders is a sweet and refreshing read. There is light drama; enough to keep you interested but not serious enough to corrupt the values of the characters. The story is told from the eyes of the main character, Wendy. Wendy is a church girl from way back. an elementary school teacher, she is married and pregnant with her first child. Sweet, cute, obedient to God, Wendy has it all.
Wendy’s husband is a a young, accomplished, African American businessman who provides well for her. However, he has some issues that revert to the “Hood”. His clubbing and getting high days are waning and he knows it. He’s trying to find his way when suddenly, all heck blows loose.
The author also introduces us to Wendy’s family. Kim, her sister, her parents and her outrageous grandmother, all add to the flavor of this novel. The story shows a lot of family love, Christian family values and how we can unmeaningly do wrong because we are too stubborn to open our eyes.
Soul Matters brings forth a message while giving readers a storyline that is credible. Her characters are believable, every day people. The book examines the faith of a woman who has been blessed all of her life with her heart’s desires and has been faithful in her walk with God. Can she continue to hold on to God’s hand now that things are going badly?. All of Wendy’s family and friends gain from her struggle. The story also examines redemption in one’s life. This story was certainly Christian-centered and the author did not waver one bit in bringing forth the challenges of living a Christian life.
I enjoyed Soul Matters and look forward to more books from Ms. Sanders. This book is entertaining, not stuffy or disapproving. I would rate this book a strong four stars out of five. It is definately worth purchasing.
