7 in Seven with Lexi Davis

Lexi Davis is the author of Prety Evil, "a clever blend of sex and sizzle, humor and heart, romance and spirituality". BlackLiterature caught up with Lexi for a short question and answer session.

Q.Pretty Evil is the title of your new novel. Can you give us a brief synopsis of the book? Is it suspense? Romance? Horror?

PRETTY EVIL is not limited to one genre. It combines humor, the paranormal, suspense, romance, action, drama, Christian fiction, fantasy and probably a few others. It is the story of three playboys who anger a sexy supernatural she-devil. To get revenge, she morphs into each man's ideal fantasy woman in order to seduce and destroy them. Their only hope for survival lies in their girl-pal, Sunnie, who has a supernatural ability of her own—to detect evil beings. It's a scary, spooky, sexy, and very funny tale of good vs. evil. PRETTY EVIL is wickedly entertaining.

Q. What is the writing process like for you?

It's like a rollercoaster ride. Sometimes it's all uphill, a struggle. Sometimes it downhill, fast and furiously, and the ideas are pouring out. It's an adventure and always exciting.

Q. What was the publishing process like for you? Were you shopping the novel for awhile?

At first, my agent shopped it around as a horror novel. Horror is a hard sell. An editor at Simon and Schuster got it and picked up right away on my "breezy, humorous" style. She suggested I rewrite it, and go with that tone—a tone that actually fit me better. I was tired of trying to write to scare others and only ended up scaring myself and running out of the room. Humor, sarcastic, spoof-type writing came very easy for me. Now I was free to let my characters do exactly what I'd do if confronted with the paranormal stuff that happens in this novel –RUN!

Q. How did you get interested in writing horror or suspense? Where did this story come from? Where did you get the idea?

PRETTY EVIL has supernatural elements and some readers have told me they got a little bit "spooked," but it is NOT horror. I've always been fascinated by the supernatural realm—the things that lie just beneath the surface. As far as the idea for the story – I noticed all these novels and movies about "playas," or guys who are so smooth that they get all the ladies, and then love 'em and leave 'em. I thought to myself, Hmmm, what if they met their match? What kind of woman would it take to turn those Rottweilers into poodles? A woman who could out-smoothe them; turn their head around and have them saying, "You gonna call me?" She would be a sort of super-diva; a woman with a secret weapon. She'd be able to blow his mind. She'd be his fantasy. She'd be …supernatural. I wanted her to have a great motive for revenge, so I had them invade her space. They bought an old abandoned mansion in Beverly Hills that belonged to her, but they didn't know it, and she wants them out. Sex becomes her weapon of choice.

Q. Have you seen your book on the shelf yet??

Good question. No! It's been out for two days now, and I have been too busy to go to the store. I got another call today from a friend who was actually in Waldenbooks in Texas, and she said, "Guess what I just bought!"

Q. Tell me what’s next to your night stand or in your to be read pile. What books or authors are there that you’re reading?

Oh man! I've got soooo many books to read, I can't possibly start naming them. A lot. I'm looking forward to a break in my writing schedule to just read, read and read.

Q. Besides promoting your book, what are you working on next?

I'm in a precarious situation right now. I am heavily promoting PRETTY EVIL, which was just released, while working under a tight deadline to complete my second book. It's challenging, but everyday I have to focus and get everything done that needs to be done, and then write. My second book is going to continue in this funny, sexy paranormal genre that I've begun. I guarantee, it's going to be just as crazy as PRETTY EVIL, if not more.
